Why Must We Recycle?

by Erica Burner

Wherever you go you hear people talking about how we must recycle everything so we can take care of our planet. But is it truly worth the trouble? Think about the fact that a single plastic shopping bag can take roughly 1,000 years to totally decompose. 1000 years is a very long time for just one shopping blag.

Think about the number of plastic shopping and trash bags you go through annually. You're talking about a lot of plastic bags when you multiply that amount by the number of people living in our country. We can choose to reuse it by recycling and prevent it from sitting in a landfill breaking down for years. Many things can be recycled such as plastic bags being used to make clothing and old tires being used in constructing children's playgrounds. Virtually anything can be reused.

Fifteen years ago, the town of Lemoore, California instituted a really tough recycling program. Residents of Lemoore who did not observe the rules of recycling were fined. Needless to say, most people followed and recycling truly helped this town. A playground and waterpark were built. Their recycling efforts enabled them to fund a police department and other basic municipal necessities.

So, not only does recycling help to reuse waste products, it can also earn money for other things. Are you thinking of installing a DIY solar water heater in your apartment? But have dont have much knowledge about it. Know how to put up solar panels back home.

Although it may appear that the recycling efforts of one person can't make a difference, multiply that little difference by everyone in the world and the results could be remarkable. We could bring down the size of many landfills which, in turn, would save money in operating them and prevent damage to the local environment. Don't forget that money can be made for poor residential areas from recycling and the environment will benefit too! Everyone gains.

Consider the predicament of animals even if you're not really into recycling. They are suffering because of issues in the environment such as global warming. You can help to preserve the planet and leave a healthy planet for your children by doing just a little recycling.

Consider how long every thing you throw away takes to decay. It was brought up earlier that a plastic bag takes close to 1000 years to totally decay. A glass jar may actually take up to one million years to decompose and styrofoam may never decay at all while other items, such as disposable diapers and milk bottles, can take hundreds of years.

Because all of these things are recyclable, why should we discard them?

While we cannot recycle everything, with innovative technology we may be able to discover ways to recycle and use several of these items. In the meanwhile, there is no excuse for not recycling things like plastics, metals and glass.

Recycling these items is fairly convenient in most communities and is not costly, so it's a superb idea to help our planet. We could do a great deal of good if everyone chose to help.
